This should be your mindset while player:

  • Know when to hold and when to fold.

  • Read books and take notes

  • Choose less skillful opponents

  • Have patience and don't let yourself go on tilt.

  • don't forget to enjoy the game!

Always keep these 12 basic tips in mind while player:

  1. When you have garbage in your hand, don't wait and fold!!!
Most beginners take to much risk!

  2. Most beginners play way too many starting hands, in fact top players
typically play between 20-30% of their starting hands. Concentrate on higher value starting hands and help remove the luck element of the game.

  3. We're talking real poker here, not video poker, so remember you're not trying to impress the change lady by getting the highest hand. Your goal is to be holding a better hand than your opponents. When everyone else is frightened off by your superior play, the pot is yours.

  4. Don't get married to a hand. (You must be able to throw your hand away when it is obviously beaten no matter how good a hand you started with.)

  5. Poker is a game of skill, but a lot of the skill involves being able to
conceal your true feelings and, at the same time, to assess the true
feelings of others who are trying to do the same.

  6. It is better to sacrifice your small early bets then to rope yourself
into a betting war with a seasoned pro.

  7. One of the best pieces of advice we can give you about betting is to bet with your head, not over it. This is the slogan for Gamblers Anonymous, and it couldn't be truer.

  8. You should never be intimidated. Play steady, and have fun.

  9. In Texas Hold'em, if everyone checks on the flop you can bet on the turn even if you have nothing. Your opponents will often fold in such a situation, unless they are too many or too loose.

  10. Poker is a game that goes on within you. Control yourself and you will be a winner.

  11. At first, stick to a consistent, lower limit. Learn how to play and beat
the game before you play in higher-stakes games.

  12. This is a mistake that brick and mortar beginners make. When you want to make a raise, you should not say, "I call your bet and raise you XYZ." Your initial action is considered your final action. So if you say, "I call ..." it means you just want to call. If you want to raise, say "raise" and state the amount you want to raise, if it is a no-limit game (the amount of the raise is obvious in fixed-limit games).
